"Following the Jewish Star..." Route
The route takes you to the main historical and cultural Jewish herritage places in Biržai, Vabalninkas and Nemunėlio Radviliškis. You can find more information about the route in a special leaflet below.
"In Biržai Duchy the Jewish community was established at the end of the 17th century, during the reign of the duke Krzysztof Radziwiłł the Thunderbolt. In the 17th century the community became lager.
In the middle of the 17th‒the late 18th century, Biržai was the centre for connecting the Jewish communities of Pasvalys, Saločiai, Pumpėnai and Pakruojis. In 1765, the Jewish community of Biržai consisted of 1,040 Jews. At the end of the 19th century, it already had 2,510 inhabitants, i.e., 57% of the town’s population."
You can find more information about Biržai Jewish culture and herritage in a new handbook made by Biržai Regional Museum "Sėla", together with the Lithuanian Cultural Herritage Department of Lithuanian Ministry of Culture.
