Tourism offer development in Selonia Region

Common territorial challenge (s) that will be tackled by the project

The project partners are located in wide rural areas in Aizkraukle, Jēkabpils (Latvia) and Biržai (Lithuania) districts and face various common challenges. Tourism service providers are scattered, lacking competitiveness, and there is not enough tourism offer to attract tourists to spend several days. Thus, despite its important historical heritage, the tourism potential of Selonia remains undiscovered. Simultaneously, the rather limited amount of available historical information on Selonia is unable to fully inform the inhabitants about the region’s past. On a cross-border scale Lithuanians lack knowledge about Selonia of Latvia, including its history, and vice versa.

Project objective

The project aims to create a new, modern, interactive tourist offer “Weekend in village”, expanding the tourist offer and promoting the residents’ knowledge of the historical Selonia and Selonians on a cross-border level. Additionally, the initiative aims to spotlight local craftsmen and tourism service providers, thus attracting tourists to spend several days exploring the historical wonders of the Selonia region.

Planned activities

Activity 1.1-Development of tourism products and digital availability in Aizkraukle municipality, Activity 1.2-Development of tourism products and digital availability in Jekabpils municipality, Activity 1.3-Development of tourism products and digital availability in Biržai municipality, Activity 1.4-Study of the Selonia region and development of a new tourism product, Activity 2.1-Increasing knowledge competencies and best practices for partners tourism specialists, Activity 2.2-Increasing the knowledge and best practice competence local craftsmen, artisans, rural producers, Activity 2.3- Increasing the competences of the knowledge and best practices for local tourism service providers, Activity-2.4 Media tours in Selonia, Activity 2.5-Promoting recognition of partners newly created tourism products, Activity 2.6-Ensuring project overall publicity.
