in the first half of 19th-20th centuries, a huge livestock market was held in the place of the current J. Janonis Square, which was called Rinkos Square. Near the market, in several rows, there were small buildings where shops or small artisan workshops were located. This busy place in the city of Biržai was called - Shops row
in 1944 in the summer, during the battles for Biržai, this part of the city was almost completely burned down, and the only remaining building - the Lutheran church - was demolished.
The resulting space was used: in 1976, a monument to J. Janonis was built and a square was formed. The 3.5 m high bronze sculpture of J. Janonis is placed on an 8.5 m high plinth. According to the authors of the monument: sculptor K. Bogdono and architect V. Brėdikis, it symbolizes a candle with a flame blowing in the wind, thus reflecting the short but fiery life of the poet who tragically passed away at the age of 21.
In 2023, the square was reconstructed -rest areas and swings were installed. The square is enlivened by an illuminated fountain that dances to music every hour.
